The Beinecke Library of Rare Books and Manuscripts at Yale University is one of the world's largest rare book collections. Construction began in 1960 with money from the Beinecke family. The building is specially designed to preserve valuable folios, documents and manuscripts: to protect them from the sun's rays, there are no windows inside, and the walls are made of translucent marble. The collection of the library numbers about 500 thousand books and several million manuscripts.
