Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) or H.R. 3261, rus. The Online Piracy End Act) is a bill introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives on October 26, 2011 by Lamar Smith and a group of 12 co-sponsors. The bill expands the ability of US law enforcement agencies and copyright holders to combat illegal Internet content, trade in copyrighted intellectual property and counterfeit goods. The bill met with massive opposition and protests, and on January 20, 2012, the head of the US Congressional Judiciary Committee, Smith announced that work on the bill had been postponed indefinitely.
