Mergus (Latin Mergus) is a genus of birds of the duck family with an elongated cylindrical beak, the edges of which are covered with small sharp teeth, and a large, hooked marigold.
Excellent divers, feeding mainly on fish, which are held by barbs (most ducks have flat horn plates instead). With the exception of the long-nosed merganser, all other species prefer inland freshwater bodies.
