TIAMAT ("sea"), in Akkadian mythology (the cosmogonic poem "Enuma Elish") is the personification of the primordial element, the embodiment of world chaos. Tiamat, the creator of the first gods together with her consort Apsu, is killed by Marduk in the cosmic battle between the generation of the older gods (led by Tiamat) and the younger gods led by Marduk; he cuts Tiamat's body in two, making the first heaven, the second earth. Depicted (presumably) in the form of a monstrous dragon or a seven-headed hydra.
