Monument of wooden architecture; a sample of an earthquake-resistant structure. Included in the list of monuments of history and culture of Kazakhstan
The Holy Ascension Cathedral was built in 1904-1907 by engineer AP Zenkov according to the project of a talented architect - Konstantin Arkadievich Borisoglebsky and was built entirely of wooden parts, sewn with iron bolts.
“With a grandiose height,” Zenkov wrote about the cathedral, “it was a very flexible structure. Its bell tower swayed and bent like the top of a tall tree and worked like a flexible beam. " The earthquake of 1910, which turned the entire one-story Verny (former name of Alma-Ata) into ruins, seemed to have bypassed the creation of Andrey Zenkov - the second tallest wooden building in the world. Only the bent cross reminds of the earthquake experienced.
