Lying 20 km north-west of Leros, Patmos is considered the most beautiful and certainly the most famous of the small islands of the Southern Sporades. During the Roman Empire, the island was a place of exile - it was here that John the Theologian was exiled, and it is here, in one of the caves of the island, that he writes down the "Book of Revelation", which predetermined the entire fate of the island. In 1088 Saint John Christodoulos founded here the monastery of John the Theologian, which for many centuries became one of the centers of Orthodoxy and is now considered the third largest in Greece.
