Orchids are the undisputed aristocrats of the flower world. Trendsetters. The rulers of the flower ball. Poets devote poems to orchids, composers of plays, and artists for many centuries have captured them on their canvases. Nature did not stint, generously endowing orchids with a variety of unusual shapes and colors.
It is not surprising that since ancient times, orchids have been fanned by many legends and tales. Everything beautiful is instantly overgrown with myths. The divinely beautiful is woven into the fabric of myths about deities. At different times, legends about orchids arose in China, where they have been known since the 8th century BC. e., and in Latin America and later in Europe.
A New Zealand tribe has an unusual legend about orchids. The following legend is passed from generation to generation.
Long before the appearance of people, even at a time when the earth was only snow-capped peaks, the sun sometimes warmed the surface, which led to the strongest melting of snow. Huge streams of water rushed to the seas, and evaporated to form a thick cover of clouds. The sun was very upset that it could not see the beauty of the Earth. It tried to pierce the clouds, which resulted in incredible rain, followed by a rainbow.
In those days, only spirits lived on earth, who immediately decided to take their place on this multi-colored bridge. But the rainbow could not bear the weight of the perfume and shattered into many small fragments that turned into beautiful orchids.
