For the unusual shape of the flowers, some of the heliconias are called by the locals "the lobster claw", and for the variegated colors - "the parrot flower". They mixed various shades of red, orange, yellow, less often white. Interestingly, in some heliconias, the seeds are a kind of chameleons: they are initially orange in color, and later turn blue. Travelers describing the tropical rainforest of South or Central America often mention garlands of brilliant purple flowers hanging overhead, like blades covered in blood.
