The museum was opened in 1984 in the house where the playwright A. N. Ostrovsky was born. The wooden house - a cultural monument of the early 20s of the XIX century - is located in Zamoskvorechye.
In "Notes of a Zamoskvoretsky Resident" Ostrovsky describes his "small homeland" as follows: "This country lies directly opposite the Kremlin, on the other side of the Moskva River, which is probably why it is called Zamoskvorechye."
In this "country" on Malaya Ordynka Street, at house number 9, in 1823, in the family of an official, the great playwright, "Columbus Zamoskvorechye" Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky (1823-1886) was born. He spent all his life in his hometown and loved Moscow as the heart of the Russian people, as the historical center of his life and culture. Zamoskvorechye in the minds of people is closely connected with the name of the playwright, here the heroes of his plays "lived"
