The Ascension Church in Yelets is one of the tallest and largest in Russia, a striking representative of the official Russian-Byzantine style in architecture. Built according to the project of the famous architect K. A. Ton, the author of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, while the emperor ordered to declare the architect "for the beauty of this project [of the Ascension Cathedral] the royal favor." The temple was built for 44 years, with donations from Yelets merchants and townspeople, the opening and consecration took place in 1889.
