Will is known to be the son of Bootstrap Bill Turner. According to Jack Sparrow, father and son are like two drops of water - both in appearance and in ability. However, during Will's youth in England, his father was not with him, and the boy grew up believing that his father sailed on a merchant ship. Obviously, in memory of his father, he wore a gold medallion sent by him - a missing coin from the accursed treasure of the Aztecs. When his mother died, Turner was 11 years old, and he travels to the Caribbean to find his father. The ship Will sailed on was attacked and sunk by the Black Pearl under the command of Captain Barbossa, and, ironically, by the same ship his father was a member of when the Pearl was commanded by Jack Sparrow. The ship's crew was looking for the medallion Barbossa needed to break the curse of the Aztecs.
