The Church of the Savior on Ilyin was built in 1374 by residents of the street in memory of the Novgorodians who died during an unsuccessful military campaign against Torzhok. The Church of the Savior is one of the most outstanding monuments of Novgorod architecture of the 14th century. The world fame was brought to the temple by the murals of the famous Theophanes the Greek.
This is the only temple in the world that has preserved the frescoes of the great Byzantine master who painted about 40 churches. The murals of the temple are unique and unforgettable in terms of the expressiveness of the characteristics of various characters. The bold, free style of painting gives the temple a grandiose sound.
