The painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is a cycle of Michelangelo's frescoes, created in the years 1508-1512 and considered the pinnacle of High Renaissance art.
The central part of the painting of the vault is made up of Nine Scenes from the Book of Genesis.
The paintings are divided into three groups and the theme of the first group of images is the creation of Heaven and Earth by God.
From left to right: The cycle begins on the first day of Creation when God creates light and separates light from darkness. The events of the next, second day - the separation of land from water, in violation of chronology, entered the third scene. In the central fresco of the group, the largest of the three, the Creator is depicted twice. On the third day, God creates the Earth and vegetation, on the fourth - the luminaries (the Sun and the Moon) to control the night and day, the time and seasons of the year. According to Genesis, on the fifth day, God created the animal kingdom, but Michelangelo skipped this part.
The center of Michelangelo's plafond took the stories of Adam and Eve, one of the most famous images in the history of world painting: the creation of Adam, the creation of Eve from the rib of Adam, and the scene of sinning and expulsion from Paradise.
On the sails of the vaults on both sides and at the ends of the chapel, Michelangelo placed the largest figures: twelve characters personifying the foresight of future Salvation: seven prophets of Israel and five sibyls of the Ancient World, their names appear on tablets under the pedestals.
