Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University is one of the oldest universities in Ukraine in the Chernivtsi region (Bukovyna). It was founded in 1875 on the basis of a theological seminary, consisting of 3 faculties: theological, legal and philosophical. In the period when the territory entered the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918, teaching was conducted in German. After the transfer of Bukovina to Romania in 1918, Chernivtsi University was transformed into Romanian in 1920. In 1940, after the annexation of Northern Bukovina to the Ukrainian SSR, Chernivtsi University was transformed into a Soviet state university (with 7 faculties), teaching in Ukrainian. In 2011, UNESCO decided to include the central building of the university, the former residence of the metropolitans, in the list of World Cultural Heritage. Bukovina.
