One of the amazing miracles, for which the nature of Abkhazia is so generous, is the world-famous New Athos Cave. For millions of years it hid its secrets in the depths of the Iverskaya Mountain and was discovered quite recently, just half a century ago - in 1961. And in 1975, the first train of the "cave metro" with tourists passed through an artificial tunnel leading to the cave.
The New Athos Cave is a colossal karst cavity with a volume of about 1 million cubic meters, which rivals the most famous dungeons in the world in size. Huge halls and galleries winding in bizarre meanders stretch for many hundreds of meters.
The New Athos Cave consists of 11 rooms, 6 of which are held daily excursions, the next 2 - weekly, one room is reserved for scientific work. The original names of the halls were changed to new ones twice: before the opening of the cave for excursions in 1975 and after the 1992-93 Georgian-Abkhaz war.
P.S. Unfortunately, not a single photograph will convey the feeling that it captures when actually being there. You feel like a blade of grass against the background of such centuries-old antiquity.
