The mosaic copy was made by Giacomo Rafaelli in 1814. Commissioned by Napoleon and redeemed (after the latter's abdication) by his father-in-law Francis II, is located in the Minoritenkirche in Vienna.
As long as the world exists, so much humanity admires the talent of Leonardo da Vinci, the beauty, mystery and magnificence of his creations. All of them are unique and have not yet been fully studied. For more than five hundred years, in the modest and inconspicuous refectory building of the Milan monastery "Santa Maria della Grazie", the majestic fresco "The Last Supper" has amazed connoisseurs of art
depicting the biblical plot of the last supper of Christ and his disciples, or rather the moment when Christ says to his successors: "One of you will betray me."
The apostles are depicted in groups of three, arranged around the figure of Christ seated in the center
Bartholomew, Jacob Alfeyev and Andrey;
Judas Iscariot (in green and blue clothes), Peter and John;
Thomas, Jacob Zebedee and Philip;
Matthew, Judas Thaddeus and Simon.
Leonardo, the eternal experimenter, painted it on a dry wall, not on wet plaster, so the painting is not a fresco in the true sense of the word. The fresco should not be altered during the work, and Leonardo decided to cover the stone wall with a layer of resin, gabs and mastic, and then paint over this layer with tempera. Due to the chosen method, the painting began to deteriorate several years after the end of the work.
However, it became a milestone in the history of the Renaissance: the correctly reproduced depth of perspective changed the direction of the development of Western painting.
