The temple of Hinduism, Sri Swaminarayan Mandir, is not located in India, but in Canada. The temple belongs to the spiritual organization Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), established in the late 18th century and became popular in the early 20th century.
The temple was built of snow-white carved marble. During the construction, all the basic principles typical for the construction of temples by the ancient Indians were used.
Hundreds of craftsmen in India carved details and lace for the temple from stone, so that later, in a record 18 months, this masterpiece of exotic architecture was assembled in Toronto like a huge puzzle, without a single nail. The huge building, with many domes, is supported by the ingenious design of all parts. It can be safely included in the list of "Seven Wonders of Toronto".
The total number of elements that make up the structure is 2415. In order to carve them out of stone, it took the efforts of 1800 Indian craftsmen. Funds for the construction of the temple were collected in the form of donations from believers; its construction cost about $ 40 million.
The main materials for the construction were Indian granite and sandstone, as well as limestone from Turkey and marble from Italy. All elements of the temple, including the exquisite stone lace, were carved in India, and then the building was assembled without the use of nails. Parts of it are fitted so skillfully that they stay firmly in place.
There are several similar temples in the world: in Delhi, in London, in Houston, in Chicago, in Nairobi and in Toronto.
Mandir in translation means the place where the soul stops and is the place of meditation. There are two buildings on the territory of the temple: the first is the stone Mandir itself. The second is the Haveli teak. The word Haveli means royal and this style of architecture was popular in the 17th century.
