Germany. Cochem Castle rises majestically on a 100-meter cliff. Whichever side of the town of Cochem you are, this symbol of the city will be visible from everywhere.
The fortress was built in the 11th century by Count Palatine Ezzo. Over time, the castle became the possession of the emperors. In the 14th century, the castle was expanded and fortified, but in the 17th century it was occupied by French troops and blown up. They also almost completely destroyed the city of Cochem. The castle remained in ruins until the 19th century, until the time when a Berlin merchant bought it out. He rebuilt the fortress according to the original plan. Later, the castle was rebuilt in the then popular neo-Gothic style. A Berlin merchant with his family used this castle as a summer residence.
He later sold the castle to the German government (in 1942). Since 1978, the castle has become the property of the city of Cochem. Today, the castle houses magnificent Renaissance and Baroque furniture, which was so carefully chosen by the owners.
