The Naval Cathedral in the fortress city of Kronstadt was founded on September 1 (14), 1902 by order of Emperor Nicholas II in honor of the 200th anniversary of the Russian fleet. The architect took the Hagia Sophia Cathedral in Constantinople as a model. Built with donations from the people and funds from the Naval Department, the cathedral was conceived as a monument to all the sailors who died for the Fatherland, the names of 12 thousand sailors were carved on the memorial plaques.
The unique temple-monument to the history of the Russian fleet has become the town-planning and maritime dominant of Kronstadt - the main dome of the temple is visible from all points of the Nevsky fairway.
