Suzhou
Suzhou is one of the most beautiful places in the Middle Kingdom, a city of parks, gardens and pagodas. Legend has it that the construction of Suzhou began in 514 BC by order of the emperor, who wished to have a city that would have no equal in beauty. Suzhou, located in Jiangsu Province, is the oldest city in the Yangtze River Basin.
The city of Suzhou was decorated with 16 gates: 8 ground and 8 water. The Panmen Twisted Gate, which survives to this day, is located in the southwestern part of the Great Canal in Suzhou. You can get to them via the Umenqiao stepped arched bridge, which offers a beautiful view of the canal.
Panmen Gate is part of the ancient city wall, built in 514 BC during the era of the Warring States.
Inside the Panmen Gate, there is the 1000-year-old Ruiguanta Pagoda or the Pagoda of the Good Light. Once upon a time, it contained a precious Buddhist stupa made of pearls.
