Politically, the first two southern tours of the emperor were the most significant. The emperor began his first tour in 1684, just a year after the uprising of the three vassal princes was suppressed. His second tour, in 1689, was of a longer duration, with a longer route, and was accompanied by tremendous imperial fanfare. It was this more magnificent second round that the emperor decided to celebrate with a set of twelve monumental scrolls, called "South Tour". The painter Wang Hui (1632-1717), an outstanding master of painting, was chosen.
