Aarburg Castle is located 60 kilometers west of Zurich, on a rocky steep bank above the town of the same name.
Lying in the western part of the cliff, a small palace and the so-called bergfried tower, located in the eastern part, are the heart of the fortress. The palace is made of limestone. The bergfried tower is a square with a side length of ten meters. The wall thickness is about 3-3.5 meters. The lower floor has been cut inside the rock. There was a chapel in the castle, which was destroyed by fire at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1842, a neo-Gothic church with a two-tower façade facing west was built in its place.
