Jan Adam Kruseman

Jan Adam Krusman (Feb 12, 1804 - March 17, 1862), portrait painter from North Holland. He was born into a famous family, in 1819, at the age of fifteen, he went to Amsterdam and entered the Tekenacademie, where he received his first lessons from his cousin, Cornelis Crewsman. Studied in Brussels from 1822 to 1824 with François-Joseph Navez and Jacques-Louis David, he painted over 500 portraits, mostly of nobles and wealthy burghers. His portraits are notable for their lack of idealization and attention to details of clothing. He had many successful students; among the most famous were David Bles, Moritz Kalisz and Israels.
