Victor Gabriel Gilbert
French artist Victor Gabriel Gilbert (1847-1933) was born in Paris. His parents were poor, and could not give the talented young man the education typical of artists. Then Victor had to hire an apprentice apprentice to a decorator for training. Lack of classical education, perhaps, forced him to take a closer look at the life around him, and draw inspiration from there. So he became the painter of Les Halles, an area in Paris that was the center of street vendors, and by the way, still exists today. All these markets are a fun and noisy part of Paris. Many of these scenes were painted for display at the Salon in 1880, and won him his first gold medal. Victor's painting has consistently passed under the influence of time from realism to impressionism.
