Rolf Armstrong
Rolf Armstrong (1899 - 1960) was born in Seattle and raised on the shores of the Pacific Northwest. In 1908 he moved to Chicago and entered the art institute, where he studied for three years. In 1919, Rolf went to study art at the Académie Julian in Paris. After that, Armstrong set up his studio in Greenwich Village. Here he began work on the Siegfield Girls pin-up series. They appear on the covers of many publications and theater posters. In the 1920s and 1930s, Armstrong's pin-up style became very popular and he reached the pinnacle of fame. His paintings of young women, with beaming smiles, with wild flowing hair, became the standard for glamorous art. And today they are among the most expensive pieces of pin-up art. All the great stars of that time ordered him portraits - Mary Pickford, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Katharine Hepburn.
