John Sloane
Contemporary American artist John Sloan dreamed of becoming an artist as soon as he learned to hold a pencil. At the age of four, he filled in drawings every available piece of paper. His abilities were encouraged at school and as a teenager he decided to pursue a career as an illustrator. John did not receive a formal art education, but went to college to study art and then receive a degree in the humanities. Studying the works of great American masters, he honed his skills in his spare time. John says: "I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the countryside and the changing seasons, and the land offers me an inexhaustible source of subjects. When I paint a meadow or a country road, I feel like I'm inside a painting." John continues to live and work in his farmhouse, which he and his wife bought immediately after the wedding to transform it into a Victorian dream home. A favorite form of recreation is long walks with the dog in the neighborhood. John still believes that love remains the greatest power on earth.
