George Henry Durrie
George Henry Durrie (George Henry Durrie, 1820-1863, USA) was born in Hartford, Connecticut. In his youth, a self-taught artist painted portraits. In 1839 he received painting lessons from Nathaniel Jocelyn, a local portrait painter and printmaker.
After 1842. he settled in New Haven but traveled frequently to New Jersey, New York, and Virginia. Around 1850 began to write genre scenes from rural life. Four art editions of his work were published between 1860 and 1863. Six additional ones were published posthumously. His winter paintings are reminiscent of Dutch painting in their serenity and beauty of everyday scenes.
Until now, his paintings are often used to decorate Christmas cards, plates, boxes, wallets, calendars and other cute little things, which are bought in many before the holiday. In addition to winter landscapes, he has a number of summer views and genre scenes in the interior.
