Gaspar van Wittel

Gaspar van Wittel (Casper van Wittel) (1653 - 1736) - an artist of Dutch origin, who lived almost his entire life in Italy and created landscapes of its cities - Vedi. In the Italian way, he was nicknamed Gaspare Vanvitelli (Gaspare Vanvitelli). Father of the architect Luigi Vanvitelli, who built the Caserta Palace.
He mastered his artistic craft in the studio of Matthias Vithos, who painted the corners of parks with lush vegetation, bringing to the fore the semblance of a still life (fish, game, etc.). It was probably then that young Vittel acquired a fondness for detail.
At 19 he left the Netherlands and went to Italy, where his teacher Matthias Vithos once lived. The earliest surviving sketches of Kasper are dated 1681 and have character.
Casper van Vittel specialized in creating paintings with views of different cities in Italy, including Venice, Milan, Ferrara, Verona, Padua, Bologna, Udine, Florence, Piacenza. But each time Casper returned to Rome, which became his main place of residence.
Casper practically had no competitors, because he created topographically accurate landscapes of various Italian cities, first of all - the papal capital and country palaces of the "black nobility".
