Gabriel Metsu
Gabriel Metsu (Gabriel Metsu) (1629-1667) - Dutch artist, master of genre, portrait and historical painting.
Son of the painter Jacques Metsu (c. 1588 - March 1629). He received his first drawing lessons from his father, continued his art education with Nikolaus Knüpfer in Utrecht, and also studied with Jan Veniks.
In his early works on historical themes, mainly mythological, allegorical and biblical subjects are reflected and the influence of the Rembrandt school is felt. In works after 1650, Metsu turns to urban and genre scenes from the daily life of Dutch people. In these works, he perfects the style of drawing by Jan Steen, Jan Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch, giving it an expression of a deeper sensuality and at the same time a calmer mood. At the end of his life, influenced by the Leyden school of painting, he attaches great importance to the skill of detailing, especially in the image of luxurious fabrics, which were supposed to look smooth and shiny.
