Francis Cotes
Francis Cotes (Francis Cotes) (1726-1770, Great Britain) - English pastel painter, one of the pioneers of pastel painting, one of the founders of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768.
Born in London, the eldest son of Robert Coots, a pharmacist (his younger brother Francis Samuel Cotes (1734-1818) also became an artist specializing in miniatures.
One of the most fashionable portrait painters of his time, Francis Cotes pioneered the creation of the King George III Society of Artists and became its chairman in 1765.
The artist's paintings possess clarity and warmth, drawing the viewer's attention to a carefully drawn costume. After 1764, the costumes in his paintings were mostly done by the drapery painter Peter Thoms.
The artist's work took place within the rococo style, but bore the imprint of academicism.
