Edward Ladell
The English self-taught painter Edward Ladell (1821-1886) was probably the most famous of all Victorian still life painters. Although he was a self-taught artist, he developed his own style of still life, certainly drawn to the Dutch tradition. Edward Ladell is always easily recognizable, as he almost always used a wine glass, fruits, flowers, and sometimes a bird's nest, caskets, or carved burdock, objects, on a marble ledge draped with an oriental rug. Edward Ladell's still lifes of Victorian richness and consistently high quality have made these creations immensely popular. The paintings are kept at the London Academy of Arts. Edward Ladell's still lifes can also be seen in art galleries in Bristol, Colchester, Exeter, Harrogate and Sheffield.
