Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein
Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein (1788-1868) - German portrait painter.
He received his first drawing lessons from his father at an early age. In 1804 he entered the Dresden Academy of Arts, where he painted his first portraits. In 1807, Vogel left for Russia, in now Estonian Tartu, at the invitation of Baron von Loewenstern, whose children he taught drawing in Dresden. In 1808, the artist moved to St. Petersburg, lived and worked there in the palace of the Gagarin princes, where he opened his workshop.
In 1813-1820 Vogel lives and works in Rome, where many German artists lived during this period. Being in a constant conflict environment between adherents of the classical and romantic schools of painting, Vogel tried to keep a neutral position. Among his colleagues in Italy, Vogel was in very good standing.
Back in St. Petersburg, Vogel began to create his own collection of portraits, which he painted from his famous contemporaries. By the end of his life, this collection contained more than 700 portraits of high artistic and historical value.
