Anton Raphael Mengs

Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779). The largest German painter of the era of classicism, an excellent portrait painter. The artist skillfully combined the exact transfer of individual features of the model with baroque splendor. During his lifetime, contemporaries saw in him the new Raphael, and he had international fame. He painted portraits of the most powerful people of that time, such as Pope Clement XIII, King of Prussia Frederick II the Great, kings of Saxony, Spain, Grand Duchess Catherine Pavlovna and others.
