Anton Doll

Anton Doll / Anton Doll /, German landscape painter and representative of the Munich school. Doll was born in Munich into a teacher's family. Already in childhood, Anton showed a pronounced talent for drawing and in his youth he was developed by his teacher Franz Damen (1793-1865), a portrait painter and lithographer. Doll studied law at the University of Munich, but interrupted his studies in 1849 to devote himself entirely to painting. At the age of 26, Doll became a member of the Munich Artists Society and exhibited permanently there. Doll's early works, mostly watercolors, depict views of Munich. Because of their accurate representations, they have documentary value.
Among his most famous works are views of his native Munich, depictions of village life and especially winter landscapes. Doll's works are in the New Pinakothek in Munich and the graphic collection of the Stuttgart State Gallery.
