Hermanus Koekkoek

Hermanus Koekkoek (Hermanus Kukkuk), Middelburg, March 13, 1815 - Haarlem, November 5, 1882 - Dutch painter, printmaker and draftsman, famous for his seascapes, the youngest son of Johannes Hermanus Kukkuk (1778-1851), brother of landscape painters Barenda Cornelis Kukkuk and Marinus Adrian Kukkuk, and the father of artists Hermanus Kukkuk the Younger (1836-1909), Willem Kukkukk (1839-1895), Johannes Hermanus Barend Kukkuk (1840-1912) and Hendrik Barend Kukkuk (1849-1909?). Several of his grandchildren also became artists, including Marinus Adrianus Kukkuk the Younger (1873-1944) and Stephen Robert Kukkuk (1887-1934).
Hermanus Kukkuk studied painting with his father, marine painter Johannes Hermanus Kukkuk.
In 1832 he participated in the Leevende Meesters exhibition in Amsterdam, thus demonstrating that his left-handedness did not hinder his talent. Shortly thereafter, he established himself as an independent artist.
